How do we scale battery production without negatively impacting the environment? That seems like the perfect topic for an Earth Day 2022 discussion.

This summer, Ascend Elements will open a commercial-scale, lithium-ion battery recycling facility in Covington which will be North America's largest battery recycling facility. We'll talk with Ascend Elements Vice President of Global Marketing & Government Relations Roger Lin, about his company's mission, their plans for Covington, the proprietary innovations they'll be using here, and what it all means for the EV industry and the world.

What About Those EV Batteries?

Not long ago, nickel was a coin, cobalt was a paint color, and lithium was a drug used to treat certain mood disorders.  You might have heard of lithium-ion batteries, but they weren't something sold from a rack in the checkout line at your drug store.  Even if there was one inside your cellphone, you couldn't get inside to touch it.

Electric vehicles (EVs) changed that. Or, rather, America's late-to-the-party-gotta-catch-up embrace of EVs coupled with global supply chain issues have made batteries fodder for the latest headlines.

Eco Eagles Fund, NCCA Students Plant Teddy Bear Magnolia 

Last Christmas, students with the Eastside High School, Newton County Eco Eagles were concerned about the carbon footprint of cutting down so many trees for Christmas. So, when they raised money to plant a tree to offset that impact, their science teacher, Betsy Proffitt, contacted Sustainable Newton for suggestions for a group that could purchase and plant a tree. (Since EHS is moving to a new campus next year, planting a tree on the current school site made no sense.)

In March, students at Newton College and Career Academy joined with the Eco Eagles to plant a Teddy Bear Magnolia on the NCCA campus, becoming the first tree in the school's arboretum managed by students in the forestry program.
